Happy Seafarers Day!
The Icelandic Sjómannadagur, or the annual Seafarers Day, is celebrated today, 2nd June. Every ship in Iceland remains in harbour over the weekend and all fishermen have the day off to take part in the maritime festivities. This year the day is extra special as it is the 75th anniversary of the first fisherman’s celebration, first celebrated in 1938 in Reykjavik and Isafjordur.
The festivities this weekend, featuring lots of fun for the whole family, serves as a reminder of how important the sea and its fishermen are to Iceland‘s history, economy and people. The fishermen compete in swimming and rowing races and other tests of strength including the ever-popular tug-of-war.
