Recommendations for the 2016/2017 fishing quota
The Marine Research Institute (MRI) has published the state of stocks report 2016/2017 with prospects and recommendations for TAC for the upcoming quota year starting 1 September. The report includes recommendations for TAC of 38 species. The general evaluation of fish stocks is that they are in good shape and the utilisation moderate.
The MRI advises that the catches of cod (Gadus morhua) should not exceed 244,000 tonnes, which is 5,000 tonnes increase from previous fishing year. The increase is based on the fact that the cod spawning stock has increased and has not been larger over the last 40 years.
The form of the report has been changed. Among new chapters or sections are a chapter on changes in the ecosystem, and the impact of humans on the system, and a summary on fishing in Icelandic waters. See further on MRI's website.
